A key element of Jack’s home run was that he swung and swung that bat. He commenced with a database of 8,000 proteins that could be the bio-marker for the cancers. He found the mesothelin protein at about the 4,000 mark. Yes he swung the bat 4,000 times to find the protein. Then through Internet research he came across carbon nanotubes, which are hollow cylinders with walls the thickness of a single atom, coated with a specific antibody designed to bind with the 1 in 8,000 protein he had discovered.

Then he needed a laboratory to develop working protypes of his technology. He wrote to 200 professors with a proposals to work in their lab. He received 199 rejections and 1 maybe. Through perseverance he convinced the that professor to give him lab space.

Jack is the uber-example of innovation by swinging your bat more.

No battle plan survives contact with the enemy

Nor will your project plan survive contact with its initial progress

Nor will your start-up business plan survive contact with its initial product development, customers and channels to market.

Nor will you career plan survive contact with your first job.

This is not a new concept. In 1785 the Scottish poet, Robert Burns said it a most romantic and sincere way in his poem ”To a Mouse”, which read:

“The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft agley.” (The best laid schemes of mice and men / Often go awry.)

If plans always go awry then why do them? Easy, if you don’t understand where reality deviated away from your plans then you can’t adapt and you can’t make better plans next time.

The real power in plans however rests in planning quickly, enjoying the journey when reality and circumstance shunts you and your plans off track and then adapting quickly with new plans and new actions to show those random collisions that make up life that they can be conquered.

The Internet is full of excellent productivity tools that can become important for any business. With these tools you can save money, time and energy and streamline your work processes. There are multiple tools that you can try out, but that in itself takes time, and sometimes you can be charged for something that you will not actually use. To make your life a little easier I have five of the best tools that I use each and every day for my company, and that we certainly couldn’t operate without.

These Tools Will Become Part of Your Every Day Working Activities

Quickbooks is a fantastic online accounting tool. It makes recording and maintaining your accounts easy, even if you have never had to deal with accounts before. This tool provides you with all sorts of options that range from creating and sending professional invoices and monitoring your profit and loss. All of the information is stored securely online so you can access the data wherever you are. It’s a great back up option and will protect you from data loss thanks to the cloud storage facility.

DropBox is ideal for storing folders and files online and accessing them later from different computers. You can use DropBox on your mobile phones, laptops and computers. This tool stops the need to carry around a pen drive and risk losing vital data as you travel to and from the office or meetings. All of your files and folders can be accessed quickly with no waiting for items to be downloaded or uploaded. To add to the box you simply drag and drop, it’s as easy as that.

BufferApp is a must have tool for any business that uses Twitter and Facebook. You can use BufferApp from your mobile devices and also on your browser on any computer. The tool allows you to create and schedule updates to share on various social networking sites. They are automatically scheduled to be posted at the most beneficial times, or you can alter the schedule to suit you. If you use Google Chrome the BufferApp extension allows you to quickly post any link to your schedule so it will be posted later. A great time saving app.

Evernote is another productivity tool designed to help busy business owners on the go. It is easy to capture all sorts of data ranging from images to links, audio clips or notes you create and store them on Evernote to be used later on. This tool is also available online and through the mobile phone so every time you stumble across same useful information simply save it to Evernote and use it later, or share it with chosen colleagues or clients.

The final productivity tool is for the iPhone. Weave allows you to plan and create task lists. You have the ability to add all of the jobs required for projects that will keep you on target. Assign users that are able to collaborate with you through the app and ensure everyone stays updated. The other great feature is the expenses feature. When you are out and about quickly input your spending so you can keep a running track as you go along. It reduces the time you need to spend in front of your accounts software once you get back in the office.

Productivity tools are worth investigating as they really can help you to become more organised. With all the advantages available online these days your business needs to take full advantage to keep up with the competition and ensure that your business is able to stay on track when it comes to finishing projects and serving customers.

Free speech is at the heart of creativity, change and progress and if societies want to continue to progress they must rigorously protect everybody’s right to free speech and not sacrifice it on the altar of political correctness.

Many proponents of freely expressed ideas and dreams that challenged the social norms of the time have been persecuted, vilified and laughed at. Yet these ideas underpinned so much of the world’s knowledge and advancement.

Copernicus, Galileo, Darwin, Pasteur and Columbus are a few vilified yet extraordinary innovators that come to mind.

People of the world – speak you mind, share your opinions and share your thoughts.

Law makers - never relent in upholding our right to free speech. Without free speech there is no freedom of ideas and without ideas the world’s standard of living will regress.

The rise of the insane, illogical and ridiculous bureaucratic rules has to be stopped. Today I read in the Herald Sun that 2,000 patients, mostly elderly are dying in the Queensland health system every year because of dehydration and starvation.

Ms Long said for hygiene reasons, the food handlers couldn’t unwrap or take lids off the food when it’s delivered, but neither could many elderly patients.

“It’s then up to the nurse on duty to come around to the patient to make sure they eat it, if they can,” she said.

This is a terrible rule, set without any consideration of the customer experience (the elderly person who cant open the package) and with complete dis-respect for key employees involved in the delivery of the process? Food handlers can’t be trusted to wash their hands. Food handlers can’t be trusted to drop the unwrapped food on the floor and re-serve it?

Rules are not for rules sake. Rules are not for satisfying over-zealous policies. Rules are for putting parameters around business and organisational processes so that they deliver quality end results to the customer and/or stakeholder.

My main line of work is as a business adviser providing assistance to business owners, directors, organisations and companies in the areas of insolvency workout, restructure and turnaround. In helping out one company I got myself caught up in a transaction that resulted in me being named as one of nine defendants in a multi-million dollar law suit.

After years of interlocutory legal proceedings the matter finally settled last week. The settlement was the result of a lot of good legal work by a lot of very talented lawyers. I also made a solid contribution by being able to articulate very simple explanations to the plaintiff’s convoluted and complex claims.

One of my explanations was just six lines long and struck at the heart of a multi-million dollar claim.

All walks of life including lawyers often mistake complex for clever, when the real clever is the ability to cut through the crap and confidently articulate your point in the fewest words as possible.

A lean articulated point is like David, toppling the voluminous, complex and convoluted that is represented by Goliath.

Here’s a good idea. Have a point. It makes it so much more interesting for the listener
